I wholeheartedly disagree Stoss. Charlies life is indeed news, and very important news at that. Charlie is more than just a raving lunatic whith substance abuse issues that would make Pete Doherty look like a poster boy for the moral majority. Charlie Sheen represents one of the most important ideals of our modern society. That idea is that the average person with a below average number of firing neurons can indeed become rich beyond imagination. It is this idea that keeps people working mundane jobs with little hope of ever improving their level of financial prosperity. The average garbage collector wakes up on a monday morning, opens up the newspaper and reads the transcript of a Sheen interview and says to himself "wow, no wonder im not rich beyond belief, im not nearly as crazy or retaded as that guy"

Without Charlie Sheen (and others like him) everyone would seek higher degrees of education, greater knowledge, higher salaries, socialized health care and god forbid, a free thinking society.... The American dream would cease to exist, and in their usual show of maturity and sportsman like behavior, would undoubtedly drag the rest of us down with them.

so you see hash tags of #winning, #tigerblood and #checkit are more than mere lunacy in the twitter verse, they are the force behind American hegemony and social status.

besides, Sheen is the best new material to hit 4chan since the internet police.

for the lulz,

-Routhier

(i will concede however that 2.5 men is possibly the worst show of all time)

Y'know, if a person really wants to get away from all that convenience and stuff, I recommend moving to Germany! Stores close early, nothing's open on Sundays, selection and service are at a bare minimum, prices are high, and people fill up all their spare time complaining about it all. :-)

Part of the problem here is people like to complain about whatever it is they possibly can. There are easy solutions to most problems. See below:

"I hate my boss and work sucks" - get off your lazy ass and get a new job or go to school so you don't have to continue flipping burgers or whatever.

"Damn custy's be wanking on my jive" - if you don't like the service industry, see above comment.

"My girlfriend is a bitch " - well that's just hurtful and likely not going to score you one in the sack tonight, however if that's how you truely feel, similar to the above advice drop the bitch and get a new one, or be single for a while. If this isn't the person you intend on spending the rest of your life with (or at least a significant portion of it) then you're just wasting time anyways.

My findings on the topic ...
while it's pretty obvious that "human" is just a layer on top of the homo-sapiens animal, I'll risk the following statements:
- that human layer in no way cancels the animal in us
- that human layer is NOT able (despite what most people say) to contain the animal in us

I actually think that 99% of what animates us is sheer animal instinct. What we see in any grouping of people (at work, the club) and what we'd like to think as stemming from millenia of human evolution is just plain low-grade animalism : social dynamics, hierarchy, courting favours, pecking order, getting laid etc, you can see all that around the water hole in the savanah and looking at who gets to de-louse who in the monkey pack.

What kills *me* is the vast amount of energy devoted to DENYING that this is what we are.

Back to scratching my balls.

About the dirt in marketing bit ...

As ever, it's a question of terminology and the associated meaning. To the French-speakers, it's not dirt, it's "terre" (and someone in the marketing company should and problably does bloody well know). The WTF here is the inconsistency. That picture would have worked OK with "localement" or "d'ici" but not with "locally".

What may have happened here is that the picture was created for the English market and some twit thought it would work in Canada not realising that the Anglos in Canada have adopted the term "dirt" with its negative connotations.

Stoss,

random thoughts ...

I installed the server (or a mockup, it's not clear exactly what it is) at home, and took a peek at what people were talking about on the forums (ok, ok, "fora"). It looks like the idea is that a company could install their own Wave server and hook it to the net or keep it completely in-house. I can't comment on what kind of provision has been made by Google so far in the hooked-up-to-the-net scenario to keep purely in-house exchanges on the local server whilst allowing exchanges with the outside world. Not being an expert in the domain, for all I know this is covered by Java / networking / internet protocol policies.

On the wow-everyone-sees-my-every-keystroke point, that makes me chuckle. 1 keystroke = 1 "blip" (their very cute term) which is an XML doc. It's not a huge XML doc (compared to x10 MB XML docs with insane namespaces I've had to handle in the past, etc) but it's still a factor of ~200 (random guess, can't be bothered to check right now) chars in the XML to the one keystroke represented. I know that broadband is a reality in 99% of the places that matter (if you don't have broadband, you obviously don't matter, pshaw) but the old fart in me still balks at the wastefulness. Oh well. I guess it's pretty meaningless when you consider that 99% of all bandwidth use is kids on myspace with their "mood=wish my mom would die" and porn.

There, random thoughts. Must GBTW. Take care.

On that note, movies like "Eagle Eye" and "Stealth" to name 2 are completely irrational fears that are common amongst the non techies. Can accidents occur? Certainly. Will our computers take over the world in some hostile manner (whether or not it be for our own good in the end)? Absolutely not. A hollywood fantasy it is (interpret with Yoda speak). Do I wish it would/could happen? As the judges on American Idol would incorrectly say "110% yes!". Why do I wish it could happen you ask? My response to that is "cuz it would be damn cool, now stfu n00bsauce".

I accept that adjustment to my last statement. In fact it fits in perfectly with my comment on how technology adapts, but people don't see it that way.

I have to slightly disagree with your last statement. People do learn from their mistakes, however they don't learn to adapt those lessons to new situations. Like not putting my hand on the stove because it's hot, doesn't mean I won't go put my hand on top of my cars engine. It's a similar lesson but different enough that there's almost no reason there should be a correlation. We humans are sometimes good at that and sometimes not, what's obvious to one person isn't to another. Unfortunately it's this premise that will make it nearly impossible for man to ever truely create a true human like artificial intelligence anytime soon. How would you describe to a series of and/or/xor/xand etc. gates how to determine the similarities between two different situations.

I am ending this before I get completely offtopic. Just my 2 cents.

Change your password every 3 months is one of my favourites, the other one we had to practice recently was a password of no less than 20 characters. This makes the password significantly less secure because you're now restricted to something easy to remember that's long. Which is easier to hack, or it gets written down somewhere.

It's a hard drive encryption login on boot, so the only way i could remember it before coffee is by setting it to "please let me on my computer".

Also, who from Google is reading your blog? I see Mountain View "arrived" in your live feed.

I believe the comet that people transported to was Hale Bopp. And the idea that a computer is testing the strength of your password is like someone asking you for your password is kind of ridonc. I mean, of course its not going to forget your password... it needs to know so you can actually log in. Add a little salt and you'll be fine. Furthermore, as an IT professional (/cry) I would recommend all of the standard techniques as they make it hard to remember your own password and that keeps me in business. Don't wake up sheeple.

I recently did the same, there's some things I want my twitter people to see that I might not want the entirety of my facebookers to see. Not particularly because I'm twittering bad things or things that I would be ashamed if my mom saw, but more because the audiences are different. Twitter for me is mainly comprised of comp sci buddies and weird al, whereas facebook has everyone I've ever met for longer than 10 minutes in the past 27 years of my life.

So for me it's twitter is full of my technical friends and facebook is just a random gathering of people I've met in life with no other real connections per se.

I have a feeling that the Internet as a whole has cut down on the newspaper and encyclopedia business (not any one specific site or service). But yeah even if people are losing their jobs because the Internet does their job better, faster, and free-er that's life. Their jobs got outsourced to everyone who does it for cheap online. Editorials are being replaced by blogs. News aggregators == win. Hell, when everyone views articles in the newspaper or on the news as overwhelmingly bias or flat out misinformation, no wonder people won't pay for it. And encyclopedia articles may be outdated by the time they are actually printed which is why wikipedia and other dynamic resources make them irrevelent.

Of what I hear about this book I'm reminded of the TD banking commercial where they 2 old guys on a bench complain about how everything is just so convenient these days and people don't have to leave the house to do stuff, and then they remember how milk used to get delivered to their house and then they say "ya it was nice you didn't have to leave your house"

I can't find a link to it on youtube :( So I guess this just proves Mr. Keen even "wronger"... Hah!!!

Maybe it's like the apple. Chickens evolved to be tasty because humans chose the plumpest, tastiest chickens, bred them together, and in return, chickens lead a life of relative safety and leisure, protected from foxes, the environment, steady source of food and mates, and guaranteed survival for their tasty young.

Multiple personalities are the way to go but its nice to find that special person that you can settle down with, relax, and finally be yourself. I <3 you Stoss. You are the wind beneath my wings.

Also Twitter is mostly full of people who think so highly of themselves that they think that people actually want to know their every move. I mean having your own blog is egotistical enough but at least it allows you to voice your opinion and get things off your chest or have a creative outlet of some sort. Somehow I don't think "Woke up. Found ham. Ate it. Rejoiced." or "At Terminal 1. Guy in front is wearing a sombrero. He smells of lavender" has the same therapeutic value as a blog.

It can only be a medium of creativity or comedy. If I were to tweet everytime I actually did anything it would only be a hassle to myself. Noone would read it. Hey this just in. Sparkles ate a pizza. Hot off the intertubez. Shocking! I would only be contributing the vast category of topics on the internet filed under "noone cares".

What's your beef with Muslix man?!? It's friggin awesome... I mean think about it: you can get a gigantic box of Cheerios for 2 bucks but Muslix - no... it's half the size and 5 bucks. Now as much as I believe corporations always sell you shit for the highest price you can pay - this is not the case with cereal. Also Muslix doesn't claim to be low in cholestrol, good for your heart or any of that other crap. You pay a lot for it cos it's got everything in it that makes it taste good and unwanted by diet freaks looking to lead a healthier life by switching their brand of cereal.

Muslix rocks! The hair part.. I agree with everything.

Hello there my good friend.

Not too many people equate Jesus with chocolate either.

Associating easter with chocolate eggs started in the 1800’s. Chocolate was all the rage. It was the treat of choice for most middle and upper class denizens. Chocolatiers sought to use the image of the egg as a way to celebrate Easter and sell their products.

I can respond in my blog if I want to, besides you didn't leave an email address, so how do I even know how you are *shrug*?

There is a fine line between convenience and laziness... Which do you honestly think you are in?

What the hell? Don't respond to my comments in your own blog comments... That would require me to check back on YOUR blog. That is not convenient for me... and I am all about the convience.

Thanks R (and apparently your same named son) I appreciate the ignoring. I sometimes message people "Hey" for no reason, it is a little pleasure of mine that makes me giggle. Also, the 6 lines thing was something I was testing and forgot to take out, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

(Here is the rest)
-R
P.S. - I received your MSN message of, "Hey". I chose to ignore that message. Just thought I'd tell you.
P.P.S - 6 lines != 400 words!

Wow Stoss. This is borderline deep - What are the Brits doing to you over there? I had a similar experience this weekend... I ordered a pizza (I was too lazy to cook) and watched "The Notebook" (it was on TV). I, unfortunately, did not have any deep thoughts while watching it. All I could think about was, "Is this what my Sunday nights have come to?"

Dear Mr. Stoss.
I too enjoyed Stranger than Fiction.. just watched it a few weeks ago.
I think that the book about my life would become boring with all the school work it would have to describe lately.. although the plot would pick up when i publish my new website tomorrow. oh wait, then it would just go to another type of school work. (I'll send u the link)
And I would just like to say that I too would like a dozen hot, underage, forbidden Capulets on my death bed.
The End
Love Nat :)

Yes, I must agree with Benson on this one. To mention tits, King George's 12th century castle, quaterback, E, finest 3% beer...thats amazing. Oh, and the rest was good social commentary.
